COST OF LIVING

There is a lot of information out there about the support available both nationally and locally to help you with the Cost of Living. To make it easier to navigate, we have compiled information about the different support and advice below. Click the sections to find out more.

The Government's Help for Households website has lots of resources and links to support you and your family at this time.

Suffolk County Council's Cost of Living Support leaflets signpost you to local services who can help. Translated versions of this information are available on their Helpful Resources page. 

Food

Fuel, Energy, Utilities and Household Bills

Other utilities and household bills:

  • Water: Anglian Water offers tariffs for low-income households that can offer up to 50% discount on water and sewage usage

Anglian Water LITE and Extra LITE: Up to 50% depending on income and eligibility assessment

Payment breaks: You can pay less than your water bill, or have a break from paying for a small period of time, and catch up later

Reach:Out-Here to Help: Reach:Out has partnered with Anglian to listen and provide friendly support to customers in financial challenge 

  • Phone & Broadband: Find social tariffs for your phone and broadband with Ofcom's table of providers offering discounts. Social tariffs are cheaper broadband and phone packages for people claiming Universal Credit, Pension Credit and some other benefits 
  • Free Mobile Data: The National Databank is providing free mobile data to 500,000 people in need via Good Things Foundation’s network of community partners, in partnership with Virgin Media O2, Vodafone and Three: www.goodthingsfoundation.org/databank/

  • Credit Unions - These can help you with affordable loans
  • Citizens Advice  - For free and impartial advice on all aspects to support you through difficulty

Benefits are paid by the central government, not your local council.

Grants

A grant is an amount of money that a government or local authority gives to an individual or an organisation for a particular purpose, such as support with housing costs.

If you are struggling financially, there are grants available which you may be eligible to apply for which can help lessen the burden.  The following support is administered by Suffolk County Council:

Household Support Fund

The Local Welfare Assistance Scheme

The Local Welfare Assistance Scheme (LWAS) is administered by Suffolk County Council and helps those experiencing financial hardship. There are lots of reasons why you may be in hardship and if you are eligible, LWAS can provide financial help.

The scheme is not intended as emergency support and only one application can be made per household. LWAS is not intended as long-term support. The quickest way to make an application is via the webform, using your smartphone, tablet or computer. If you have all the information required to make an application the webform will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

  • Help with funeral costs: This can be an expensive time, and can be unexpected and not planned for, bringing financial worry for those remaining.  Bereavement might also affect the benefits of those left in the household. For information and support see; https://www.gov.uk/when-someone-dies

  • Martin Lewis' Money Saving Expert is the UK's biggest consumer website, with more than 16 million users a month. The site's dedicated to cutting your bills and fighting your corner with journalistic research, cutting-edge tools and a massive community – all focused on finding deals, saving cash and campaigning for financial justice.
Housing
  • Government support website - Help for Households
  • Warm Homes Suffolk is a project designed to help vulnerable people and families make their homes cheaper to heat. The project can provide the following for eligible residents in Suffolk:
  1. Grants for First Time Central Heating
  2. Boiler or heater stopped working? Warm Homes Healthy People can lend you electric heaters and point you in the direction of any grant funding available such as assistance in applying for a local authority renovation or home assistance grant.
  3. Do you own or privately rent your property? Warm Homes Healthy People can arrange for an independent surveyor to visit your home and discuss energy efficiency improvements that could make a real difference to your heating bills.
  4. The project can also access grants to help pay for insulation and basic draught proofing

  • Homelessness 
  • Streetlink exists to help end rough sleeping by enabling members of the public to connect people sleeping rough with the local services that can support them.

Worrying about your financial situation can take its toll on your mental health.

There's lots of support you can access which will help you

Speak to someone you trust

  • You may find it helpful to talk to your partner, a relative or a friend about your problems. If this is not possible, talk to someone else you can trust, like a faith leader or a tutor, or try a helpline.

Speak to your GP

Speak to the NHS Wellbeing Service

  • If you are aged 16 or over and live in Suffolk, the NHS Wellbeing Service are here to help. They have a range of free support including one-to-one therapy and online workshops to help you manage and cope with feelings of stress, anxiety, depression and low mood, to improve your wellbeing and quality of life. Speak to the Samaritans who offer free emotional support 24 hours a day - in full confidence.

If you are emotionally distressed and need urgent mental health support:

  • Call 111 and press option 2 for the NHS Mental Health Crisis Support line.
  • If someone is in immediate danger of harming themself call 999

NHS health costs

You could be eligible for help with the cost of NHS prescriptions, NHS dental treatment, eyecare, travel to receive NHS treatment and NHS wigs and fabric supports.

You'll answer a few questions, and it will show the help available if you're not automatically eligible including:

  • NHS Low income scheme

Provides help with health costs for families on a low income.  Apply online or find more information at www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/lowincomescheme

  • NHS maternity exemption certificate

Entitles you to free NHS prescriptions if you're pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months.  The certificate can also be used to provide entitlement to free NHS dental treatment.  Ask your doctor, midwife or health visitor to apply.  Find more information at www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/matex

  • NHS medical exemption certificate

Entitles you to free NHS prescriptions if you have a certain medical condition or physical disability.  Check the medical conditions list at Medical exemption certificates | NHSBSA 

  • NHS Prescription Prepayment Certificates (PPCs)

Provides help with NHS prescriptions.  If you pay prescription charges a PPC could save you money.

3 and 12 month PPCs covers all your NHS prescriptions for a set price.  www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/ppc

HRT PPC covers certain hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medicines for 12 months.  www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/hrt-ppc

Warm Spaces

Warm Spaces are available throughout the county for people to access and come together for sociable reasons.

  • All Libraries in the County are welcoming Warm Spaces available for anyone to come and use
  • Rural Coffee Caravan's Meet Up Mondays venues are also available as spaces for social meet ups
  • Warm Spaces in Suffolk mapped out by the Rural Coffee Caravan

If you are unable to drive or walk to your nearest community space offering this service, please consider using community transport where this is available.

Are you keen to offer a Warm Space facility in your community? Contact Rural Coffee Caravan for support on how to offer a safe and supportive space.

You may be able to receive a grant from your local District or Borough Council to support you in any additional costs occurred in providing these spaces.

Support for Families

If you’re on a low income, you might be able to get help with some of the costs of sending your child to school:

  • Many schools offer support to families who need financial assistance with uniforms, for example by giving you vouchers towards the cost.
  • It's also worth checking if your school has any second-hand uniform sales – this can be a good way to pick up lower-priced uniform at a fraction of the retail cost.

  • Freecycle is a website where people can donate and receive free household items
  • Similarly, Freegle is also an online community where free household items are on offer

Help to combat Domestic Abuse

Unfortunately, we know that cases of domestic abuse increase in circumstances where there are worries around finances, debt, losing a job etc.  If this is happening to you or a loved one, there is advice and support for you.

Help to reduce addictive behaviour

During times of stress, addictive habits can start or worsen.  Dependency on drugs or alcohol can take hold as a way of coping with the situations you may be facing.  Gambling can feel like a way forward to help get you out of debt quickly but can quickly spiral.

Donate money to help others in Suffolk

Volunteer your time

  • Volunteer with charities which support families during this time.  Register on Volunteer Suffolk to see what opportunities there are near you
  • Speak with your employer as you may be entitled to paid volunteer time off work.  You could you use this paid time to work with a local charity, food bank or credit union to undertake tasks which support them to support those most in need.
  • Looking to set up a Warm Space in your community? Contact the Rural Coffee Caravan for support on how to set up a safe session and get your facility mapped.  Your local District or Borough council may be able to help with funding to support your group financially to provide this service. Please see the direct contacts to the right of this page to fnd out more.

Food banks - volunteer or donate

  • Food banks rely on the goodwill and support of local communities to be able to supply food to those who are struggling to buy it. You can help by offering to volunteer or by making a donation to help them support those who need it. 
  • The best way to get started is to contact your local food bank directly to see what they need the most.

Free food sharing app

  • Share surplus food with your neighbours rather than throw it away by signing up to Olio - Your Local Sharing App (olioapp.com).  Here you can give away food for free to local people - whether it is groceries from your fridge, foods about to go off or spare home-grown vegetables. This way you can help those who might not have a lot of money for food, whilst also helping the environment by cutting down on your food waste.

Give away unwanted household items

  • Do you have unwanted household items you want to give away for free to someone who needs it in your community?  Online community groups such as Freecycle: Front Door and Freegle connect local people who can donate for free - everything from sofas and fridges to baby buggies and DVDs.

Help for Businesses

The Cost of Living situation presents challenges for many businesses.

However, there is help and support available for business owners:

  • Business Debt Line - call 0800 197 6026.  This is a sister company of the National Debtline, providing free debt advice for small business owners.
