Support for people with disabilities
Access Suffolk
- Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities
Students with SEND are supported in mainstream classes through personalised learning provision. Teachers know and understand students' needs and ensure these are met in classrooms. Some students are supported in mainstream classes by Teaching Assistants who use specialised knowledge and skills to support learning. Where necessary, students receive extra support through intervention work: sometimes students are withdrawn from mainstream lessons to do this.
There are two SENCOs who are supported by the SWMAT SENCO. There are six Teaching Assistants and one Higher Level Teaching Assistant. The SEND department supports students with a range of needs: Autistic Spectrum Conditions, Physical Needs, Specific Learning Difficulties, Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment, Social, Emotional and Mental Health.
Accessibility: Newmarket Academy is situated on a large site with five main teaching areas. The Academy has ground floor, first floor and second floor classrooms. The ground floor is accessible to wheel chair users but there are no lifts to the first and second floors. The nature of the site means pupils have to go outside to access the different buildings. There are three accessible toilets on the site.
