The Children's Trust – Community Services
We are the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury. We deliver rehabilitation, education and community services through skilled teams who work with children and young people aged 0-18, with acquired brain injury, neurodisability, and complex health needs. It is our ambition that all children with brain injury and neurodisability have the opportunity to live the best life possible.
Community Services
We work in communities across the UK supporting children and young people with acquired brain injury, and their families.
Specialist services are particularly effective in supporting children who may have made a good physical recovery after an accident or illness and are expected to make a successful return to mainstream school, but are left with ‘hidden’ difficulties that can seriously affect their home and school life.
These difficulties can include:
- learning new information;
- concentration and memory;
- understanding and using language effectively;
- developing independence skills appropriate to their age;
- making and keeping friends;
- staying safe;
- controlling emotions and impulses;
- managing fatigue and getting enough sleep.
Our Brain Injury Community Service supports children and young people who:
- have a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of an acquired
- brain injury, either recently or some years ago;
- are medically stable;
- are 18 years and under at the time of referral; and
- are registered with a UK GP.
These children and young people no longer require intensive therapy but would benefit from some level of therapeutic support.
Through our specialist multidisciplinary team we are able to support these children by providing advice, support and rehabilitation delivered at home, in school, or a combination
of both. With a member of our community service based in four of the UK’s major hospitals, and a dedicated multidisciplinary team based at our national specialist centre in Surrey, we are able to support children from right across the UK.
Anybody can refer a child who has a suspected or confirmed acquired brain injury, including concussion, into the service and we can provide clinical screening, advice, brain injury education and onward referral completely free of charge.
For some children this may be sufficient and no further support will be required. If additional specialist support is needed and this isn’t available locally, there are a number of assessments and rehabilitation packages we can offer. Delivered by our multidisciplinary community team, we will work to secure funding for these packages on the family’s behalf.

We run the UK's largest paediatric residential rehabilitation service for children with brain injury. Each child has an individual programme of therapy, education and care. It is funded by NHS England via National Specialist Commissioning or via CCGs.
The Children’s Trust School is non-maintained for children aged 3 upwards with learning difficulties. We combine education, therapy, care and medical cover to cater for children with complex medical needs, degenerative conditions and sensory impairments.
Our residential short breaks offer flexible and nurse-led care for children and young people between the ages of 0 to 18. We also offer holiday schemes and Saturday clubs for children from Surrey with complex needs.
We provide a nurse-led service for children who are technology-dependent. This includes children: who have a complex tracheostomy; require artificial ventilation; fed via parenteral nutrition; need central line management/ intravenous medication.
Our Brain Injury Community Team supports children and young people in challenges around cognition, communication / behaviour and gives them the best opportunity to succeed in school. The team works closely with the child’s family, school / local agencies.
Ages 0-18 years.

Support for people with disabilities
- Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities
We have an unparalleled reputation in our field thanks to our commitment to meeting the diverse needs of these children and their families, coupled with our ability to deliver the best possible combination of nursing, therapy, medical care and education. Staff undertake continuing professional development both in-house and externally and are fully trained to meet the diverse needs of the children we work with. All staff undertake safeguarding training and first aid training is completed as required.
Our specialist multidisciplinary team ensure that each child has their own individualised method of communication – whether signs and symbols or augmented or alternative communication aids such as eye gaze or iPads – best suited to them. This ensures they are involved in their programmes and can make choices and make their opinions/feelings known, even if they’re unable to speak verbally. Feedback is welcomed from parents and children alike and is used to continually improve our services.
