Support for people with disabilities
- Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities
Elm Tree is an inclusive school. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum for all children and recognise that adjustments to practice may be necessary to meet individual needs. We aim to create a learning environment which meets the needs of each child and our school team works to ensure that special educational needs are identified, assessed and appropriately met, enabling all children to have full access to all elements of our school curriculum.
We have two specialist communication units within our school accessed via Local Authority placement meetings. Staff expertise and advice is shared within school and we will be training as a Communication Friendly School from September 2014. We have staff trained in Elklan and Talk Boost and regularly assess language development.
There are places for up to nine children in the Hearing Impaired Unit, which can be accessed from Reception to the end of Year Six. The Speech and Language Unit has places for up to fifteen children which are available from Reception to the end of Year Two. Children access the Units either on full-time, or in some cases, on dual placements.
