Pakenham Water Mill
Pakenham Water Mill, the last working water mill in Suffolk, is on a Domesday site. Here, since before the Battle of Hastings in 1066, millers have used the simple technology of water power to produce stone-ground wholemeal flour from locally-grown wheat. The 18th C mill is maintained and operated by a team of volunteers who continue this tradition. It has a large breastshot wheel, plus a 1904 Blackstone oil engine and a very rare ‘Midget’ roller mill. In the old kitchen of the adjoining miller's house there is an 18th C brewing vat and bread oven. There is a river-bank walk, a wildlife area, a tea room, a picnic area and a shop.
Come along to this picturesque site for some refreshments and a lesson in history!
