EarlyBird and EarlyBird Plus

General Details

EarlyBird and EarlyBird Plus are programmes developed by the National Autistic Society (NAS) and run in Suffolk by licenced trainers from the Early Years and Childcare Service. Details of the programmes can be found at

EarlyBird is for parents/carers of pre-school children up to 5 years of age.

EarlyBird Plus is for parents/carers of children aged 4-8 years alongside a member of staff from their school.

A child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will experience the world differently and understanding these differences is essential for parents/carers and school staff.

The programmes cover 3 areas:

  • Understanding autism – learning how children with ASD experience the world
  • Communication – how to change your approach to support and improve communication with your child
  • Behaviour – develop strategies to pre-empt problem behaviours and/or manage those which do occur

Each training programmes involves 8 group sessions and 2 individual home visits. The group sessions are held in a venue on the same day each week and last two and a half hours.

A maximum of 6 families can take part in a programme at any one time.
