East & West Suffolk Under 18 Eating Disorder Service

NSFT Logo

The East and West Suffolk Eating Disorders Service offers a community service to young people with possible Eating Disorders.

Age of service: We look after children and young people under the age of 18 who have eating disorders.

The conditions you treat:

We treat children and young people with changes in behaviours and thinking which may lead to eating disorders. For example: restricting food intake, increase in exercise, self-induced vomiting, other behaviours that may impact on weight, such as, over worrying about body image and shape. We treat young people with developing Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. We do not have any weight criteria for referral to our service.

What to expect from us: Our emphasis is to provide early support for under 18’s. We provide comprehensive assessment to determine need and risk. From this we develop a care plan with the young person and their family. We aim to start treatment within 28 days of a referral being sent to us, or 7 days if urgent, in accordance with targets set within the ‘Access and Waiting Time Standard for Children and Young People’.

What does support from our service look like?
Treatment and therapy may include education and information about eating disorders, nutritional support and advice, meal planning and management. Our principal therapeutic approach is family based as this has the best evidence for promoting recovery for children with eating disorders. We also offer parent and psychoeducation groups.

How we support carers, including friends and family: We recognize the importance of families and carers and where possible, we work closely with them. We understand that talking about eating difficulties can be a sensitive issue to discuss and we offer time to talk to individuals and families.

We support parents and carers with educating and helping them through their child’s recovery from an eating disorder by focusing on different subjects, such as, nutrition, exercise, understanding the condition and building resilience.
We also offer parent and carers support groups for those who are in service with us.

What does your service do?

We look after children and young people under the age of 18 who have eating disorders.

Where do you see people? We see people in clinics, in local areas and as necessary in their homes.

Who does your service provide a service for?

Young people under 18 years old. The team can provide an eating disorders service for children and young people who have additional needs or disability. We will work closely with other professionals involved in their care. We work together with families and communities to support children and young people with special educational needs and disability to meet their potential and live healthy fulfilling lives in their community.

We would link with the Neuro Developmental Team to co-work where appropriate dependent on the young persons assessed needs.

How can I start using the service?

Referral is either through your GP or the Emotional Wellbeing Hub

How are decisions made about who can use the service?

When a child or young person’s referral is received by our team, dependent upon the information we have received we may contact you or the professional referrer to find out more about the young person’s situation before any decision is made about next steps.

Following this triage process, we will arrange for the child or young person to meet with a clinician for a face to face assessment. At a face to face assessment we will look to establish any mental health issues and what help is needed. We will do this with the young person and their parents/carers where appropriate.

Once the young person’s assessment has been completed, it will be discussed in a multi-agency team meeting which consists of different clinicians, consultant psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and mental health practitioners to plan what we need to do next, and ensure the appropriate support is provided. We will keep the young person and their parents/carer informed and provide our contact details. The young person’s GP will also be notified.

If the referral is urgent we will make contact as soon as we can to discuss and plan next steps.

If you are unhappy with any decisions about your young person’s care, please let us know. You can speak with your clinician, the team manager or use our formal complaints process by contacting complaints@nsft.nhs.uk.

Is your service fully accessible?

Any information we have we can have translated into your language if needed. We will provide interpretation when needed including sign language. Our buildings are fully accessible with disabled toilet access. We will organise home visits where necessary to ensure access to our service.
