Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities

Our setting is fully accessible to children and parents of all abilities, with level access into the building along a private path from the car park. The setting is all on one level.

We have 2 qualified practitioners trained in Special Educational Needs - who would undertake any additional training to help meet the individual needs of children.

We support all children through individual planning and Individual Education plans if and when required.

We work closely with professionals to ensure that all specific needs are met and any delays that are recognised are addressed and supported correctly to ensure that all children are able to reach their full potential.

At The Nature Den Nursery we support children with SEND by providing support to these children from staff who have received the following training:

  1. SENDCo Training
  2. Makaton - SENDCO finished level 8
  3. Observing and Assessing Children 0-5years
  4. Supporting children and families with English as an Additional Language
  5. A positive approach to behaviour
  6. Autistic Spectrum Disorder in the Early Years
  7. Supporting a hearing impaired child
  8. Up and down, round and round - Patterns in Play
  9. British Sign Language - level 1, training level 2
  10. Support for children with visual impairment
  11. PECS training

Our named SENDCo is Emma Tredray, our deputy SENDCo is Ali Gibson. The SENDCo's role is to supports staff in writing IEP's for children, carrying out the targets, helping all staff to identify and support and meet the needs of the children. We use an inclusive approach to SEND, incorporating all children into the room. This can mean a variety of different things to different children, including adapting our room and routines where needed.

My son started in January 2020 just before coronavirus. He settled in great and when the virus struck I was terrified to send him anywhere but as a key worker for the NHS I had to. The Nature Den staff were all absolutely amazing from admin right through to the nursery workers. They were so reassuring, answering all my questions and understanding my concerns. They were completely flexible and enabled me to continue working my usual hours. I cannot fault them in any way, at a time where the entire world was changing they stayed steadfast and consistent. My son loves going to nursery and has made so many friends, his speech has developed so much and his imagination astounds me, this has all been encouraged and enabled by the nursery staff and setting. I'm so grateful to all the staff for how loving, kind, considerate and approachable they all are. Thank you ladies, you really did make such a difference to my son and family in these terrifying times.
Highly recommend
My 2 year old boy started the nature den in July and he's thoroughly enjoyed everyday he's been there. They have a wide range of activities for the children to play with. The staff are amazing. Any worries or concerns are dealt with very quickly.
