Prepcare Nursery values the abilities and achievements of individual children, and is committed to providing for each child the best possible environment for learning and development.

How does Prepcare Nursery know if children need extra help and what should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs or disabilities?

We are proud to promote a Key Persons system through the setting at Prepcare Nursery. Each child and family that attends our setting is issued with a Key person and a buddy to act in their absence. This person will support them on a personal level beginning with meeting the parent, carer and child, and going through written care plans and verbally discussing any issues involving the child concerned. Their role is to build up a close, trusting and sensitive relationship with parents and children to enable respectful sharing of information. If your child's key person has identified a possible individual need they will discuss the matter with you in private and plan together to support your child's learning and development. Our trained SENCOs can offer advice and support to the Key Person and room practitioners. The SENCOs will liaise with other professionals to seek advice and support in identifying individual needs, if necessary, with parents.

How will Prepcare staff support my child?

As a setting we have adopted a graduated approach with four stages of action: assess, plan, do and review which all contribute to Early Learning Plans (ELPs). We will listen to and work with you as well as your child. Our SENCO will explain how children's individual needs can be met by planning support using an ELP and will set targets with your input. The Key Person will work with the SENCO to oversee the ELP targets for your child. They will identify individual needs and plan next steps, accessing additional support from others where necessary, e.g. Speech and Language Therapist, (SALT), or applications for additional funding.

How will the learning and development provision be matched to my child's needs?

The Room Leader and other staff in the room your child is based will get to know the child through meeting the parents during their initial visits to Nursery. Communication is key between parents and staff to support the child's development, care and wellbeing. The environment, routine and activities at Prepcare will be adapted where possible to meet the child's individual needs, working together with the child's parents/carers and other professionals on the best way forward to adapt the child's needs. If any particular equipment was needed then we would seek advice from Suffolk County Council as to where this may be accessed from. Prepcare have strategies in place in the daily routine such as visual timetables and choice cards to help children who may have communication difficulties. If it was identified that a child would benefit from additional support, such as one to one, then Prepcare would apply to the Local Authority to seek additional funding to support the child.

 

What support will there by for my child's physical and emotional wellbeing?

The staff approach is inclusive, positive and welcoming to all. On joining our homely Nursery we provide parents with welcome packs which includes condensed sample copies of our Admissions Policy, Safeguarding Policy, SEN code of practice, just to name a few. 'All About Me' forms are given to parents to complete to help practitioners to meet the individual needs of the child. 'All about Me' forms are reviewed when a child moves to the next room as a child's needs change as they develop in their home life, this then promotes parental involvement. We provide a flexible approach to routine and environment which are based around the needs of the children. Adults act as good role models for positive behaviour and a continual positive approach to behaviour management is maintained. The Key Person builds relationships with the child and family and they provide personal care respectfully to all children. During the daily routine visual timetables are used to support children in understanding routine. Older children are supported to manage their own personal care and manage risks for themselves. Resources are accessible to the children for independent choice.

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting?

Staff regularly attend Suffolk Continuous Provision Development (CPD) Training and have experience of working with children within the Early Years age range. The child/family can access of number of services available in the locality linked to the child's identified needs, such as: Family Centres, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Therapist, Portage Worker. Within the Nursery there is a named SENCO who attends List of providers meeting to keep up to date. With parents' permission advice can be sought from the Suffolk County Council. If the child is identified as having a specific need then the team with the expertise in this area will take up the support for the child and the Nursery in meeting the child's needs.

What training are the staff supporting children with SEND, had or are having?

Our SENCO attends regular SEN Forums. The SENCO attends meetings to keep their knowledge and understanding up to date. The information from these meetings is then cascaded to other staff through room meetings and staff meetings. We have one named SENCO supported by 2 named deputy SENCOs who are all trained to Level4 and have done further courses such as Behaviour Management, Communication and Language and Makaton training have been attended by other staff members. Some staff members have attended training linked to specific needs,

How will Prepcare prepare and support my child to join the setting and transfer to a new setting/school?

If a child is identified as having additional needs upon joining the setting practitioners working with parents will assess the child, identify the child's needs and assess whether any outside agencies (with parental permission) are to be involved in the child's development. Working with other outside agencies and the parents will help us as a setting meet the child’s needs. We try and ensure any relevant documentation is shared with the Nursery if necessary. Parents and the Key Person should agree a consistent approach to ensure continuity of care from home to Nursery. If a child is making the transition to school, staff liaise with the school and invite the teachers to see the child at Nursery. Key Person and SENCO are available to attend meetings and share targets on ELP's and minutes of review meetings.

How are parents involved in discussions about and planning for my child's education?

Parents and carers are experts in their child's development. Working together to identify, assess, plan and review, from the earliest opportunity, is essential to ensuring the best possible’ Outcomes for children’ with SEND. Parents will have input with all aspects of planning for their child for example: meeting with outside agencies, being involved in the formation and reviewing of ELPs, receiving feedback from agencies and discussing outcomes and next steps.

The first point of contact within the Nursery is the Nursery Manager, who will liaise with the Key Person and the SENCOs, who will also be able to offer advice and will be able to signpost parents to other professionals able to help, such as the Health Visitor, Children’s Family Centre, the Inclusion Support Officer and Speech and Language Therapist (SALT).
