Brambles Day Nursery

Day nursery

Brambles day nursery is situated on the site of Reydon Primary school.  We are a one level building with wheelchair access throughout.

At Brambles we care for children aged 0-11 years offering full day care from 7:30-6pm all year round (except bank holidays)

Brambles is committed to meeting the individual needs of all our children. Brambles values and respects all our children and aims to provide experiences to support children's physical, social, emotional and intellectual development in a stimulating, caring and secure environment encouraging learning through play

Our resources and environment both inside and out, reflects diversity in culture, religion, ethnicity and social background.

Brambles operate a keyperson system, the keyperson monitors a child's progress regularly in order to ensure that individual needs are identified and provided for.

A learning journey is kept for all children which includes photos, observations and next step planning following the EYFS to enhance children's learning. Practitioners incorporate ideas in our adult led and child initiated activities building on the interests of the child.

Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities

At Brambles Day Nursery our Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator (SENCO) has many years experience dealing with a wide range of additional needs. The Co-ordinator is supported by staff all of whom are DBS checked, trained in first aid and are experienced in writing Educational Health Care Referral Plans, speech and language referrals and numerous other referrals.  A third staff member has just started her SENCO training.

All children within the Nursery are introduced to Makaton through play.  Staff are trained in Makaton level 4 and are able to support children with speech and language difficulties. One member of staff had relevant training in British sign language to support a child with cochlear implants.  The sensory support team  worked with the practitioner to ensure continuity between proffesionals and nursery.  Choice boards and pecs are used for further understanding.

Brambles use the "wellcomm" assessment tool for speech and language and currently assess children on entry. Drop in for speech and language sessions are displayed on the parents notice board.

Brambles has experienced children with a range of delays, Asperger's and on the Autistic spectrum. Children who experience epileptic seizures, diabetes and challenging behaviour.

With consent from parents staff can implement behaviour plans to support children who are struggling with the routine of the nursery.

We liase with outside agencies and early years consultants. Children identified with a learning difficulty will have an individual education plan (IEP) in place and staff work with the parent/ carer to compile their targets. These are reviewed every 6-8 weeks with the parents.

Children who are identified needing additional support will then be supported and activities adapted to met their individual needs within the setting. This will be planned by their key person with support from the setting's Senco. As a setting we can apply for higher tariff needs funding each term for children requiring a high level of support. This is used to provide extra staffing, resources within the setting and at home. As a setting staff have experience in using Makaton.

Children's progress is monitored and summaries are completed by the key person each term. Parents meetings are organised each term and the setting uses Tapestry, providing excellent links between the setting and home. We have a parents board providing information for parents on their child's development.

We plan good transitions as children move between rooms and onto school. Transition meetings are organised with parents and professionals involved to allow as smooth transition as possible for those children moving on to school or other settings.
