Support for people with disabilities

Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities

The college aims to make best use of the funding it receives from the Skills Funding Agency, and where applicable the Local Authority, to support High Needs Students (HNS), and as such will implement support with the resource available. Specific guidance for HNS is given in the Learning Support Policy.

The college aims to level the playing field for all current and potential students with an additional learning need by providing appropriate and timely interventions and support. We actively encourage those students with learning support needs to disclose their requirements as early as possible so that we can endeavour to meet them as soon as possible.

In particular, the College takes its responsibilities under the SEND Code of Practice 2014 seriously and has a commitment to:

  • Actively promote equality of opportunity;
  • Actively encourage involvement of students who have disabilities in policy and decision making to remove barriers to access, achievement and progression;
  • Meet individual needs in ways that make everyone feel valued and respected in order that they can develop;
  • Continue the process of inclusive learning.

Who are the best people to talk to about additional learning support?

  • Specific Needs Advisor
  • Your Son or Daughter’s class teacher

Measure taken by the College to identify learners who may need SEN support

A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her. Children and young people who have SEN may also have a disability under the Equality Act 2010. Where a child or young person is covered by SEN and disability legislation, reasonable adjustments and access arrangements should be considered as part of SEN planning and review.

The Specific Needs team will assess student needs in a number of ways, including:

  • LDAs, EHC Plans and other relevant information sourced from the previous provider
  • Through referral to the ALS team by tutors in year
  • Through tutor referral
  • Pre-entry assessment
  • Schools Liaison
  • BKSB diagnostic screening
  • Informal discussions between staff and parents
  • Parents evenings
  • Half termly reviews

How additional support may be allocated to our learners?

  • Support is allocated based on the specific needs of the individual.
    • Prospective students with High Needs are invited to discuss and additional support upon receipt of their LDA/EHC. Further to this, an application is made to the Local Authority as per their criteria, to request additional funds in order to provide an appropriate level of support. The support that is delivered is reviewed regularly by the ALS Team in consultation with the study programme tutors and parent/guardians, the young person and any other relevant professionals via an Annual Review.
    • For all other students who would benefit from additional support, referral to the College’s support services is made either via a tutor, or via the ALS team. Following referral, a meeting may be arranged with the relevant service to discuss anticipated support needs. Support is allocated on a needs-basis, and is reviewed regularly.

Ways that we measure progress and review provision for our learners

    • High Need Students have a mandatory Annual Review of their learning support and transition needs every twelve months. The young person will be invited to attend this meeting alongside their parent/guardian and other relevant professionals. The College may review and amend support during the course of the year, if required, in consultation with the Local Authority.
    • High Need Students with an Education Health Care Plan has a personalised SEN plan that is reviewed every term.The SEN plan interim targets to achieve form the student’s SMART targets which are reviewed every six weeks with their personal tutors.
    • For all learners, the college will provide regular opportunities to discuss additional support needs, including 1:1 tutorials and parents’ evenings. All learner sitting Maths and English will have an ILP which will be used to set targets and review progress.

We always review our learners in the monitoring and review process.

How can I tell the College if I am concerned about my son/daughter’s progress or wellbeing?

  • All students are allocated a Personal tutor in their first week at college. This person should be the first point of contact for all queries regarding their progress/wellbeing.
  • For High Need Students, a parent may wish to contact the ALS Team to discuss additional learning support
