Moat Barn Nursery
Day nursery
Moat Barn Nursery School is a private nursery. My colleagues and I endeavour to provide a wide range of learning opportunities and materials which I believe takes the best of current thinking on Pre-School learning for children aged between 3 months and 5 years of age. It is a bright safe and welcoming school; a truly excellent environment for Early Years Foundation Stage Learning. We aim to provide a stimulating environment with a good balance of imaginative and interesting activities. We prioritise personal and social development and the building of self-esteem. Language and literacy is emphasised, mathematical concepts such as quantity and scale, simple addition and subtraction and number recognition are covered thoroughly. Children are encouraged to use their creativity; we feel that this is a crucial area in learning.
We have an acre of garden that is partly used for forest schools, sensory area, climbing area, decking, sandpit and barked area.

Support for people with disabilities
- Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities
At Moat Barn we provide a secure environment inclusive to all children enabling them to flourish and reach their full potential. We acknowledge and respect that each child who attends out setting is unique, with some requiring individual support to help support their unique needs.
We have an experienced SENCO coordinator who covers all three nurseries we own. Individual staff members also attend training which supports specific children. This training includes nurses visiting the setting to provide us with specific medical knowledge and practical skills. Other training courses which have been completed also include CAF and Makaton.
We have a detailed Additional Needs Policy which identifies our aims and methods:
Aims
- We have regard for the DfES Special Educational Needs Code of Practice.
- SEND Code of Practice 2014
- Equality Act 2010
- We include all children in our provision.
- We provide practitioners to help support parents and children with additional needs.
- We identify the specific needs of children and meet those needs through a range of strategies.
- We work in partnership with parents and other agencies in meeting individual children's needs.
- We monitor and review our practice and provision and, if necessary, make adjustments.
Methods
- We designate a member of staff to be special educational needs co-ordinator (Emma Clarke, SENCO and Amanda Pheasant,SENCO) and give her name to parents.
- We provide a statement showing how we provide for children with additional needs.
- We ensure that the provision for children with additional needs is the responsibility of all members of the setting.
- We ensure that our inclusive admissions practice ensures equality of access and opportunity.
- We ensure that our physical environment is as far as possible suitable for all children.
- We work closely with parents of children with additional needs to create and maintain a positive partnership.
- We ensure that parents are informed at all stages of the assessment, planning, provision and review of their children's care and education.
- We provide parents with information on sources of independent advice and support.
- We liaise with other professionals involved with children with additional needs and their families, including transfer arrangements to other settings and schools.
- We use the graduated response system for identifying, assessing and responding to children's additional needs.
- We provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all children with additional needs.
- We provide a differentiated curriculum to meet individual needs and abilities.
- We use a system of planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluating and reviewing individual educational plans (IEPs) for children with special educational needs.
- We ensure that children with additional needs are appropriately involved at all stages, taking into account their levels of ability.
- We use a system for keeping records of the assessment, planning, provision and review for children with additional needs.
- We provide resources (human and financial) to implement our SEN/additional needs policy.
- We ensure the privacy of children with additional needs when intimate care is being provided.
- We provide training for practitioners and volunteers.
- We raise awareness of any specialism our setting has to offer, e.g. Makaton trained staff.
- We ensure the effectiveness of our provision for children with additional needs by collecting information from a range of sources e.g. IEP reviews, staff and management meetings, parental and external agency's views, inspections and complaints. This information is collated, evaluated and reviewed annually.
- We monitor and review our policy annually. If there are changes in legislation or current framework we may need to review the policy at other times.
