Gemma Pryke (Little Gems Childminder)

General Details

Hi, my name is Gemma and I run Little Gem's, caring for children in their Early Years and beyond. I have been a childcare practitioner for over 20 years and during this time, I was a nanny for 16 years and I have been a childminder for 5 years.

I have a degree in Childcare, Learning and Development which has benefitted me in many ways, I plan and carry out lots of fun, stimulating and educational activities that link to the Early Years Foundation Stage to prepare the little ones for school.

Working with children is my absolute passion, I find it most rewarding, knowing that I have contributed to a child's life in a positive way.

My home is a home from home setting offering a safe, secure and stimulating environment for the children. I only care for a small amount of children at any one time so that each child gets the attention they need. I have a vast amount of educational toys and resources on offer and I plan activities based around the Early Years Foundation Stage so that your little one will be very prepared for nursery.

Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities

In my setting, I make sure that I promote equal opportunity practice for all children, treating all the children with equal concern and respect.

I value and respect the different religions, origins, cultures and languages so that each child is valued as an individual without racial or gender stereotyping. I will not discriminate against any child on the grounds of disability, class or family status.

I give opportunities for the children to learn about other people’s traditions and cultures; they have access to a range of books, puzzles, music toys etc., which provide a positive image, and diversity of life.

I aim to follow the requirement of the EYFS and provide an inclusive environment for all children and their families. I am also required to comply with the requirement of the equality act 2010 and the SEND code of practice 2014.

I make sure that I have regular chats with parents/carer about the individual needs of their child/children, I talk to the children about their likes/ dislikes and interests, I always encourage parents/ carer to tell me about family culture/religion/beliefs. In return I will encourage the children in my care to learn more about all cultures and religions including their own. This will be done by reading, cooking, colouring, eating specialist foods from around the world, also celebrating any special festivals.

In my setting, I value and respect the different religions, origins, cultures and languages so that each child is valued as an individual without racial or gender stereotyping.

I Provide a wide range of resources and activities which reflect the diversity of our local area and further afield, including resources which challenge stereotypical ideas.

I Support each child through sensitive observation, regular assessments and individually planned activities to achieve their full potential.

I Provide individual support depending on the child’s needs.

I Use the 2 year progress check to highlight if I believe a child is falling behind in any prime areas of learning.

I focus on the positive things that each child can do.

I will not discriminate against any child on the grounds of disability, class or family status.

I Lead by example and challenge any form of prejudice.

I make sure that I share information about children’s learning and development and providing ideas for home learning with parents/carer as required by the EYFS.

I seek permission to ask for support from outside agencies.

I attend appropriate training to ensure I have the skills and knowledge to support children and their families.

I encourage children to respect each other as individuals.

All children will have equal access to appropriate facilities and activities
