- Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities
Lingwood Kindergarten offers places for children from the age of 2- 4 years old and we have a maximum of 30 children in nursery at one time. We are a very inclusive setting and hope that we can provide support for all types of need and disability so every child can be included in our homely nursery setting. The nursery manager Rachael Skipper is the designated SENDCO (Special Educational Needs and Disability Co-Ordinator) and has had experience in this role for 8 years and gained experience working with children who have had a wide range of disabilities or needs. Some of these include: Autism, cerebral palsy, speech and language difficulties, hearing difficulties and having a colostomy bag. The nursery owner is also SENDCO qualified and supports the named SENCO daily. Staff at Lingwood kindergarten have gained skills working with children on a 1:1 basis and have also supported children who have I.E.P’s (Individual Education Plans) and worked towards their individual targets weekly. These targets are set in the specific areas of need for each individual to ensure we are supporting and challenging each individual to meet their most potential.
Children who have IEPs have focused targets weekly and take part in 1:1 activities or small group activities to support their development. Staff members focus on 1-2 areas of need to ensure the tasks are achievable for the child. Most of these targets are given by speech and language or other professionals who we work closely with, we also add our own targets to ensure the child is being supported in all areas of need.
The nursery environment is accessible via a ramp to the main nursery door, this entrance leads into the nursery which is all on one level and very open plan. We have one large open plan play room and a smaller library, creative room and sand and water area. There is a small step into our sand and water area and into our nursery garden, this would be easily adjusted for a children who used a wheelchair as nursery would provide movable ramps so all areas are easily accessed.
Lingwood Kindergarten is welcoming to every child who attends and we would support every child to the best of our ability to ensure themselves and their families feel happy and welcome when attending. We see ourselves as a very inclusive setting. Each child has a keyworker who works closely with the child and their family to link their home and nursery learning and experiences to support the child's development. Each child is treated as an individual and their unique interests are considered when planning for their play and learning on a daily basis. We use observations from the children's learning to plan and differentiate activities to involve all children.
Parents/ carers can speak to Rachael the setting SENDCO if they have any questions relating to SEND or they can speak to their child’s keyworker who can then liaise with Rachael if this is preferred.
