Newmarket Open Door

Newmarket Open Door was inspired and founded by the local Churches Together initiative in 1997 and now manages and provides supported housing for young single homeless or vulnerable people aged 16-24.

Portland House is situated in the High Street, Newmarket, and is comprised of 3 terraced houses: Portland, Cranworth and Windsor Houses, offering 19 bedrooms of varying sizes with shared facilities.

Hypher House is a five bedroomed house in Park Lane, Newmarket, with a shared kitchen/diner and bathroom.

Who can apply?

Single people aged 16-24 are eligible with priority given to local applicants with connections to Newmarket and the West Suffolk and East Cambs District Council areas. However, the accommodation is not exclusive to those with a local connection, and applicants from elsewhere have been successful if a need is demonstrated.

How to apply?

The accommodation is not direct access.

15 rooms are contracted to Suffolk County Council Housing Related Support for young people aged 16-21.The HRS Portal manages all initial applications including those who make direct contact with us.

A further 9 rooms are independently provided by Newmarket Open Door for 16-24 year olds. Applications for these rooms are managed by the charity.

Open Door also provides basic foods and beverages such as tea, coffee, squash, potatoes, bread, eggs, a variety of foods donated by local people and through our own Foodbank.

Each room is furnished and Open Door is also able to assist with bedding, clothing, toiletries and home electrical goods for those in the greatest need.

Newmarket Open Door also operates a Charity Superstore and woodwork training.

The Foodbank is part of Newmarket Open Door, and redistributes donated foods and household products to disadvantaged people through charities, voluntary and social welfare organisations, reducing food waste to landfill.

Regular food donations are received from Newmarket Tesco, Waitrose and Fareshare.
