This allows the children to explore and be adventurous in safety and help children to experience and benefit from the activities we provide.

During your child’s time at Big Sky Nursery, Beccles your child will be allocated a key person. Their key person monitors their development in order to ensure that individual needs are met and they are making progress in their learning, reflecting the child’s current interests. Staff create a programme of themes throughout the year to ensure that the children are given a wide range of active, real life and everyday experiences to enhance their learning about the world.

Our 0-2 room is fully equipped for five children. The room has dedicated areas for exploration, sleep and play. Our room for older children has dedicated areas including a mathematical and graphics area enabling children to develop their emerging skills. Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities

At Big Sky Nursery, Beccles, we have an equal opportunities approach in our setting. We welcome all children and their families into our nursery and support them throughout their time with us. We cater for children and work alongside families with Special Educational Needs and have a family centered approach to support and help children throughout their developmental stages. We have an accredited Special Educational Needs Coordinator (Alice Mutton) and accredited deputy SENCO (Sian Beer) who will work alongside the individual child as well, with the keyperson and their parents/carers and will also work closely with outside agencies to enable each child for fulfil their potential, and work to achieve over and above the targets set for them. We understand the importance of working closely with the parents/carer so at Big Sky Nurseries we have an extensive induction process which includes a home visit to allow the child to become familiar with our staff so that they feel confident when they come in to the nursery allowing the child to settle. During the home visit collection of information will begin before the child enters the setting and will continue to be updated and supplemented over time. We have a ‘first five sessions’ form which all children will receive. Our All About Me booklet will allow our team to understand interests/activities the individual child enjoys to help the child settle into the setting, and we also use an online learning journey system to allow parents to keep up to date with all their child’s progress along with their daily diary so parents don’t miss any part of their child’s nursery day. We also have a private parents meeting room which parents are able to use for professionals meetings, along with review meetings with our SENCO to allow parents to relax in a familiar environment while their children are also in a safe environment with staff they are familiar with.

We provide a rich learning environment, inside and out, which enables children to flourish and enjoy new activities. We have a stimulating outside area which is complete with an outside classroom, mud kitchen, bug hotel, natural area and construction area for children to explore. There are many ways in which a child with additional needs can make the most of the opportunities provided. All our staff have received Makaton training level 1 & 2 and two members of staff trained up to level 4 Makaton. We use Makaton on a daily basis with all children to help encourage children’s language development. Some of the approaches we include are: supporting the child during play/language activities, allowing additional time for members of staff to plan efficiently for the child, behaviour management plans (agreed with parents/carers), allowing time for staff to observe the child, monitor the provision regularly, supporting staff to undertake additional training and dual placements for children with complex needs.

We have a system of observation and assessment planning for all children. Children, when appropriate, are supported by Individual Educational Plans which will include SMART targets. These plans will be discussed with the parents/carers to ensure that they are happy for the nursery to put these targets in place and to arrange a date to renew them (usually termly).

We have arrangements in place to identify and support children with special educational needs or disabilities and promote equal opportunities throughout our nursery. Our staff at Big Sky Nurseries all hold a level 3 and above and have additional training which suits their job roles. We have created an ‘All about me’ staff book which we encourage parents/carers to look through with all our qualifications and achievements we have completed which are also displayed on our website.
