At the heart of the historic and picturesque town of Clare the Ancient House stands sentinel, next to the fine 'wool' church. Dating back to the 14th and 15th century this unusual Grade I listed building boasts spectacular moulded plaster (pargeting) and timber work. It is thought to have started life as a mediaeval open hall house and has at various times been the town workhouse, a bakers, a poultry shop, and a priest's house. It was saved for the town when American servicemen of WWI wanted to ship it to America. It now houses the Town museum and has exhibitions of interest to visitors and residents. Its east wing is leased to the Landmark Trust. Tours of Clare and the Museum by special arrangement @£3 per person.
