Children in Care Nursing Team

The Children in Care (CiC) Nursing Team offers a specialist annual health assessment, known as a Review Health Assessment (RHA), for all children and young people, aged 5 – 18 years old who are in care and living in East and West Suffolk*.  Children aged under 5 years old are seen on a six monthly basis and their RHAs are completed by the Health Visiting service.

The CiC Nursing Team is responsible for assessing and promoting the physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people in care, with the overall aim of improving health outcomes and enabling young people to achieve their full potential.

The CiC Nursing Team consists of a CiC Nurse Specialist, three CiC Nurses, and the CiC Health Hub (Business Support Coordinators).  All CiC Nurses are registered nurses with additional qualifications, including school nursing and health visiting.

The team works closely with partner agencies including social workers, foster carers, health and education for the benefit of the child / young person.  In addition to completing the RHAs, CiC Nurses contribute to other assessments including Education and Health Care Plans (EHCPs).

*This service is provided by East Coast Community Healthcare (ECCH) CIC in the Lowestoft and Waveney area, and their contact details can be found here.

Referral and availability notes

All children and young people who have Suffolk Council Council as their corporate parent are given a CiC Health Record (blue book). This provides the child / young person with accessible personal health information, enabling them to understand their own health history and provides a resource for recording current health information.

The RHA takes an individualised, child centred approach which takes account of the diverse needs of children and young people in care. Within this the CiC nurses will discuss issues such as:

  • Physical, emotional and mental health advice
  • Development and educational needs
  • Information about the effects of a child’s health history on their development
  • Signposting and referrals to appropriate services
  • Healthy lifestyles and choices (eg: sexual health, e-safety)
  • Advice and guidance on promoting self-care and independence skills.

RHAs are usually undertaken at the placement address. However, requests for an alternative venue (such as at school or within a clinic setting) are accommodated where possible.

All our staff are aware of the SEND reforms and are active participants where children and young people are known to their services.
