Support for people with disabilities
- Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities
The willows Daycare has a qualified Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCo) and a SEND support worker who can support children with special educational needs and their families, as well as the setting to unsure that we are maintaining inclusive practice and providing enabling environments for all early years’ children to access. Over the last 11years we have had the opportunity to provide childcare to several children with hearing impairments ranging from glue ear to being profoundly deaf and have been able to support children with suspected ASD and children diagnosed with Autism, to achieve within a mainstream nursery. As a setting we have good knowledge and understanding of different strategies to support children with special educational needs and disabilities, empowering them to challenge their own abilities in a rich learning environment.
We have experienced working with different types of equipment which can be used to support children's development such as cochlear implants, radio aids, sound fields and PECS. We recognise how important it is to know how specialist equipment works and are happy to be trained to use any equipment necessary for all children to access our busy mainstream nursery environment.
Our SENCO's and practitioners have been able to worked alongside Lead Advisory Teachers for hearing impaired children, sensory support practitioners, speech and language therapists and specialist health visitors, we understand the importance of good working relationships with all professional bodies working with individual children and their families. Our staff have experience working with Educational Health Care Plan and IEP's.
Our whole setting uses Makaton signs and symbols on a daily basis, we currently have a Makaton sign of the week and song of the month which all children have been enjoying learning and using. Around 90% of our staff have had Makaton training completing stages 1-4 and some staff have completed stages 5-8. We are lucky to have staff who have completed some BSL training also.
