How does Felixstowe The Oaks & Sea Breeze Children’s Centres cater for children and families with special educational needs and/or disability?
Children's Centres are for families with children under five. In Suffolk we have joined up our Children’s Centre services with our Health Visiting service and Early Education Team as we believe this will provide you with the best care and support. The Children's Centre teams are made up of Health Visitors, Family Support Practitioners and Support and Information officers and we promote opportunities within our services for training of Community Parent Volunteers.
At the Oaks and Sea Breeze Children’s Centres, we are committed to promoting and providing high quality health and learning through play opportunities. We believe in valuing and respecting each individual in a welcoming, accessible and inclusive environment.
Our Centres have a range of policies, available to parents and professionals upon request, which are reviewed annually and include equal opportunity. We have regard to Equality Act (2010) and offer a range of universal and targeted support and services which are designed to meet the needs of all service users.
All our group activities are planned to meet the individual needs of children. We work within the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, and will capture evidence of your child’s progress as s/he attends the centres. Play sessions will offer activities which can be arranged on different heights including floor level and we adapt sessions to meet individual needs. Our toys and equipment are suitable for children aged 0 to 5 years and we have a range of specialist resources, including portable sensory equipment and a sensory room.
We offer a range of parenting courses to help support parents in understanding and managing challenging behaviours. Please see our timetable for a full list of groups and for more information.
How will staff support my child's needs?
Trained Staff are on hand during activities to offer help and support as required. One-to-one support is also available for families within the home environment and we will work in partnership with you, your child and other agencies in meeting your families and child’s individual needs.
Your child remains at the heart of our service, and should you require additional help, we will work with you to help identify any areas of concern, ensuring your child’s wishes and feelings are at the centre of any support plans. We are trained to use the Common Assessment Framework to ensure a thorough assessment of your child’s needs, recognising and building on strengths.
Information, advice and guidance is available and we can help to signpost you to other relevant, local services and supporting you and your child as required. These can include:
The Special Educational Needs and Disability Information, Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS) which provides information, advice and support to children and young people with SEN or disabilities aged 0-25 and their parents, this includes information about education, health and social care.
Suffolk County Council Sensory Team (Rehabilitation).
Suffolk Early Learning Together Service.
Speech and Language Therapists
Behavioural Support Services.
When it is time for your child to start attending nursery or school, we can support you through the transition period as we know this can be both a challenging and emotional time. Together, we can develop a transition passport which will help ensure that there is a smooth transition for you and your child into their next educational setting.
We work closely with other agencies in the community and have good links with all local schools, nurseries and the Felixstowe Opportunity Group, which also offers a range of support services for families and where children with SEN can access play activities. Details of Felixstowe Opportunity Group are available in both the Oaks and Sea Breeze Children’s Centres.
What arrangements are in place to ensure that The Oaks and Sea Breeze Children’s Centre’s are accessible for children and families with special educational needs and/or disability?
Our Centres are DDA compliant and are fully accessible from all entrances and exits. The Oaks site on Grange Road has designated disabled parking spaces outside the front entrance.
Our outdoor play areas at the Oaks Children’s Centre have easy access with safety play areas of soft outdoor flooring and artificial grass. We also have a covered area where play can continue in all weathers. The garden has a mixture of raised and low level beds, where children can dig, plant and watch things grow. Within both centres we have accessible toilets with baby change facilities which include emergency alarms. All the rooms at both centres have non slip flooring suitable for easy cleaning and carpeted areas.
The furniture within both centres is entirely moveable and adaptable allowing us the flexibility of creating and moving spaces as required. All resources and equipment are displayed at child-height, and are fully accessible, labelled with both written words and pictorially in bright bold colours to allow easy understanding and choices for anyone with sight, speech and language needs and literacy challenges.
What training or experience do the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have?
Both Children’s Centre’s are inclusive settings with staff experienced and trained in early years care and education.

WelComm – staff are trained to undertake WelComm (Speech & Language) assessments and support parents in helping their child’s Language development
