Exning Primary School

Exning Primary School provides an outstanding education within the context and understanding of shared values. We believe all children should be taught kindness, co-operation, resilience, honesty, respect, concentration and perseverance, creating an emotionally aware school family, within a safe and secure environment.

We believe the most effective way to prepare children for learning is to teach a skills based, creative curriculum giving children the opportunity to become motivated, independent learners that can steer their own learning. We give children opportunities to use their imagination, collaborate and persevere to achieve their personal bests that we celebrate within the school.

Exning Primary School is committed to meeting the requirements of the primary National Curriculum.  We want our children to leave our school with the confidence that comes from possessing a bank of essential knowledge and the skills with which they can apply this knowledge.  We believe that this will lead them to be successful, independent and motivated learners in readiness for their next stage of education.

The National Curriculum is taught through a mix of discrete core subjects and topic lessons, which integrate foundation subjects.  Topics have been designed to complement and build on one another with clear progression and links so that in subsequent year groups, they will be able to explore concepts deeper, applying their knowledge in different contexts. The more able are challenged further in their learning and children who find aspects of their learning more difficult, are appropriately supported so that they too are enabled to experience success.  National requirements and school requirements are mapped out as a whole school and then teachers plan the curriculum for their pupils accordingly.   The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils, and their understanding of the core values of our society, are woven through the curriculum.

Theme days, whole school activities and opportunities within and outside school all enrich and develop the children’s learning. After school clubs and events extend these opportunities further.

The outdoor environment and the local community are considered an opportunity for active learning for all our pupils. The school grounds have been developed so they can enrich different curriculum areas e.g. science, reading, PE etc.

Pupils have opportunities to share their learning with each other, their parents and carers and other learners through school-based and external exhibitions, performances, competitions and events involving other schools. Developing their independence and motivation as learners and their sense of responsibility as future citizens is at the heart of all our teaching and learning.

Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities

At Exning Primary School we welcome everybody into our community. We believe that child should be provided with the opportunity to achieve his or her full potential.

Every student at Exning Primary School has the opportunity to follow all National Curriculum subjects, with Quality First Teaching designed to allow all learners to access the curriculum. However, some children may require extra support to allow them to achieve their potential, and this is where our SEND support is offered.

We are committed to narrowing the attainment gap between SEND and non-SEND students. This may include one-to-one or small group school interventions with a dedicated SEND Teaching Assistant, Classroom Teaching Assitant or Teacher. It may also include other learning or behavioural interventions developed on an individual needs basis.

Exning Primary School looks forward to working with pupils and parents/carers to ensure fully inclusive access to our education.
