Family Services

General Details

The Family Services Team lead on the support of children, young people and their families so that with the necessary skills, young people progress into adulthood to further achieve their hopes, dreams and ambitions. Fundamental to this is our joint partner commitment to the delivery of services through a key working approach for all.

 Family Services offer to:

  • support individual children and young people and their families through their education pathway and/or SEND Journey
  • ensure that assessments, including education, health and care needs assessments, provide quality advice and are delivered within statutory timescales
  • monitor the progress of children and young people with SEND in achieving outcomes to prepare them for adulthood and offer support and guidance at transition points
  • support children and young people who have been permanently excluded or who are at risk of exclusion.
  • provide challenge to education providers to ensure provision meets the needs of individual children and young people.

We have six locality-based team as follows:

At Riverside, Lowestoft, there is one team supporting:

  • Lowestoft & Waveney

At Endeavour House, Ipswich, there are three teams supporting:

  • Suffolk Coastal
  • Ipswich North & East
  • Ipswich South & West

At West Suffolk House, Bury St Edmunds, there are two teams supporting:

  • West Suffolk
  • Bury St Edmunds and Central Suffolk

For young people and families, mainstream schools, local alternative provision and specialist schools, settings and units, your primary contacts will be the Family Services Co-ordinators and Assistant Co-ordinators. The education settings that each team covers, their email address, and the team members and their contact numbers are available.

The Family Services Managers and Lead Co-ordinators manage the teams and work with independent specialist providers, supporting the children and young people accessing these settings and their families.

Young people, families, practitioners and providers can contact Family Services by phone, email or letter. As staff cover a range of commitments and attend a variety of meetings in and out of the office, you may not receive an immediate response. We are committed to responding to phone calls within a maximum time of 3 working days and replying to emails and letters within a maximum time of 5 working days. When staff are not in work for an extended period of time, their answerphone message or out of office email message will provide details of who to contact in their absence.

If you do not receive a response or a reply from your local team, please contact the Lead Co-ordinator in the first instance, who will follow this up for you. If you have outstanding enquiries, you can contact the Family Services Manager for your local team.

Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities

The service operates in line with the Children and Families Act (2014) and SEND Code of Practice (2015), working in partnership with a full range of organisations involved in delivering the Local Offer, including health, social care, education settings and other providers, as well as children, young people and families directly.

It is open to children and young people and their families who live in Suffolk, including those educated in other counties.

We will work with a child or young person until such a time as they settled and progressing in a new school setting when previously at risk of exclusion, during a EHC Needs Assessment or for the period of time that an EHC Plan is maintained.
