Fen Alder Carr Local Nature Reserve - Creeting St Peter, Suffolk

Creeting St Peter Parish Council has taken over the tenancy of this lovely site for the benefit of the community. The Parish Council would like the support of local people to help maintain the site. If you are interested in getting involved please contact the Parish Clerk @ pc@creetingstpeter.suffolk.gov.uk

Would anyone would like to do a bird survey or any other survey to help us identify what flora and fauna is present? Does anyone know the history of the wood?

Visit the site to get a feel for the wildwood, to discover the plants and animals typical of a woodland that has been lost over most of the Gipping Valley- like stepping back into the past.  There is easy access to the whole site via a boardwalk taking you into the heart of the wood.

Perhaps one of the most mysterious spots in a county blessed with them; this is an intriguing woodland of alder trees, ditches and a pond. Follow the boardwalk round the wood in to the large open area of fen. This is the perfect place to soak up some of the sense of ancient, unspoilt mystery so characteristic of the Suffolk countryside.

Sitting in the heart of the Gipping Valley, Fen Alder Carr was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1982, and is managed for people and wildlife.

Fen Alder Carr is predominately Alder Carr woodland covering 1.79 ha. Most of the woodland is, or has been under a system of coppice management. The prominent features on site include a rough grass meadow (relatively rich in flora); an area of fen wetland, a pond and a network of defunct ditches crossing the reserve. A boardwalk runs throughout the site. Fen Alder Carr offers a range of habitats for wildlife including bats and rooks. Otter signs have been noted and Water Voles and Yellow-necked Mice have been recorded using the site. The pond and the associated wetland areas offers good habitat for species including Soldier Fly, Snails, Smooth Newt, Slow Worm and Common Frog.
