Cattawade Picnic Site (River Stour Trust)
Cattawade Picnic Site is in the heart of Constable country, on the edge of the Stour estuary. It is locally renowned for its excellent location for bird watching. On a good day you can see redshank, lapwings and oystercatchers breeding on the pastures of Cattawade Marshes.
At the site, there is an opportunity to fish or to canoe, using the purpose built platforms. From the carpark, you can walk along the Stour valley path, which follows the river between Brantham and Newmarket.
In January 2012, the River Stour Trust entered into negotiations with Suffolk County Council with a view to taking on the freehold of the and to take over responsibility for its upkeep. In May 2012, the Trust’s acquisition of the site was completed and we would welcome voluntary assistance to maintain this vital river access point at the end of the Navigation.

- Notes
The River Stour Trust took on the freehold of Cattawade Picnic Site in 2012 to ensure this site remained as river access point but we trusy all users can enjoy the area together.
At the site, there is an opportunity to fish using the two large platforms (accessible to those in wheelchairs) but please keep the jetty to the side clear as this is designated for canoes/kayaks. The site can also be enjoyed by walkers and picnickers as the Stour valley path follows the river from the car park between Brantham and Newmarket.
There is a small free car park with approximately 14 spaces for average sized vehicles. Unfortunately, there are no toilet facilities on site and we do not condone the use of BBQ's. We request that litter is placed in the bins by the entrance or taken away. Camping is not permitted and the gates are sometimes closed at dusk to preclude late night visits.
We ask that all visitors are considerate of the residents who live adjacent to the site.
