East and West Suffolk Mental Health Support Teams in Schools (MHST)

The MHSTs are an early intervention service that support children and young people, their families and school/college communities with mild to moderate mental health difficulties. Each MHST is allocated to specific secondary schools/colleges and their feeder primary schools within Suffolk. We work directly in schools, on site and in the wider school community, both in and out of school times, including school holidays.

We are a service which will be expanding across both East and West Suffolk to support further schools and colleges.

What can I expect from you?

The MHST provides effective brief, low-intensity interventions for children, young people and families experiencing anxiety, low mood, emotion regulation or behavioural difficulties via both:

  • Individual therapy sessions with children, young people and their parents/carers.
  • Group work for pupils or parents

We support the senior mental health lead in schools to introduce or develop their whole school or college approach.
We give timely advice to school and college staff, and liaise with external specialist services, to help children and young people to get the right support and stay in education.

What conditions do you treat?

Anxiety and/or avoidance; worry management; panic management; mild obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and other rigid/ritualistic behaviour; behavioural difficulties; low mood / depression; managing negative thoughts; irritability as a symptom of depression; thoughts of self-harm and support for alternative coping strategies for superficial self-harm; low confidence and low self-esteem; sleep difficulties

What support do you offer carers including friends and family?

We aim to work as closely with families as possible and include them when apporatie in a child/young person's care.

I need help urgently! Who do I call?

The MHST is not an emergency service.

If support is needed urgently please contact the NHS Crisis Support Line, call 111 and press option 2. This is a 24/7 helpline for urgent mental health support for anyone of any age in Norfolk and Suffolk.

In an emergency (if the young person has seriously injured themselves or taken an overdose) please seek medical attention via the Local Emergency Department.

How do I access this service?

This service is currently available across 50 schools in East and West Suffolk.

Please contact your child's secondary school or college to see if they are currently recieving support from this service, and what available support they have in place.
