ActivGardens - Chantry Walled Garden

Chantry Walled Garden runs a bespoke session for young people and adults with a mild learning disability.

The day offers a range of horticultural activities in the safe, welcoming environment of the walled garden, at a pace to suit the individual.

We have plenty of under-cover tasks in our extensive glasshouses, growing plants for Ipswich Borough Council and other clients.

We also run a plant nursery, open to the general public, specialising in plants which are good for pollinators and wildlife-friendly gardening.

People taking part in our project can tend their own mini veg plot, or help maintain our extensive flower and

There are also opportunities to work in the wider park alongside IBC parks staff and rangers, gaining valuable skills for work in garden maintenance and conservation.

Restrictions to access
The project is specifically for young people and adults with additional needs, including learning disability, learning difficulty or complex needs. The group will be led by a qualified member of staff at all times, and the site will be supervised by an additional member of staff. Participants must come with their required level of support if necessary, by prior arrangement. Although we are upgrading the site for full disabled access, it is not yet suitable for people with high levels of need or severe physical disabilities.

Nursery Cottage is our cosy base, where we gather round the table for a cuppa and a chat. It has a small kitchen where we can cook healthy, nutritious meals with what we have grown.

There are two rooms upstairs, for craft activities and IT work.
We also have a workshop for woodwork and construction activities, such as making hedgehog homes, bird boxes and insect hibernacula.

The area in front of Nursery Cottage is being transformed into a garden especially for people in wheelchairs. We have built an extensive patio and we are planning to build raised beds. Everyone is welcome to get involved with this exciting project.
