Support for people with disabilities

Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities

We provide an environment in which all children including those with special educational needs and disabilities are supported to reach their full potential. Acton Playgroup is completely accessible to all and includes an accessible toilet, changing facilities, wide doors to gain access to school area for lunch time and main hall activities. We have disabled parking areas for which permits are issued.

We comply to all guidelines in the Dept.for education(DfE, Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 2014.

Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator or SENCO - Louise Mitchell monitors the needs and progress of children who have special educational needs.

A system of observation operates in partnership with parents and other professionals to enable us to identify and monitor children's individual needs and progress.

We have and will continue to: apply for any specific equipment required; adapt the learning environment; complete risk assessments; attend ongoing staff training; hold regular meetings to discuss progress and targets; use provision mapping to show how the children are supported and the allocation of funding.

We provide information for parents for additional support from the children centre, home start, parent partnership, social communication groups and 1-1 support, PSED Intervention Groups.

Staff additional training includes:

SENCO - Louise Mitchell/Deputy SENCO Kim Farley

  • Dynavox Communication Aid
  • Widget Symbols
  • Autisum Courses
  • SENCO level 3
  • Experience in managing behaviour
  • ECERS trained - an understanding os the learning environment.
  • PTLLS trained - enables sessions to be provided for parents to support speech development - one of the prime areas of learning.

Outstanding setting Rated 5 out of 5
Our daughter started at Acton playgroup in September and we could not be happier with how she has settled into the environment. We prepared ourselves for what we thought would be a difficult transition; having only ever left her in the company of family; but we need not have been so worried. We were made to feel at ease from the very first visit; all the staff are approachable, professional and experienced. After only a short time our little girl's confidence in social situations, together with her speech content, has improved considerably. She has made new friends and speaks fondly of her time with both her peers and adults.  The playgroup uses an online learning journey to document observations in line with the EYFS. This not only enables effective parent-teacher communication, it is also an invaluable resource to enable parents and carers to see what their child gets up to at playgroup - offering much needed reassurance, especially during the settling in period. Our daughter starts school next year and the playgroup have already started to support parents and children in preparing for the transition to reception class. The staff are passionate about supporting and encouraging each child in their learning journey; recognising and rewarding their achievements, and providing them with a range of learning opportunities in their everyday practice.

Fantastic learning environment Rated 5 out of 5
Our toddler has settled very well into Acton playgroup. He has a great relationship with his key worker Kim and the other members of the team. There is so much support and everyone is frendly and welcoming. It's a fantastic evvironmrnt for playing and learning. The tapestry online learning journal is fantastic, it gives an insight into what our toddler gets up to I his sessions and monitors his progress. We love Acton playgroup!

Fantastic Setting Rated 5 out of 5
Both of my children have attended this setting and loved it. They offer an exciting range of activities and experiences, while also engaging in children's interest. The staff develop excellent relationships with both children and parents. They both support and challenge children to encourage good development in all areas of learning. Communication with parents is excellent. I have also worked with this setting in a professional capacity when children from Acton Playgroup have transferred to my Reception class. I have been impressed with their expert knowledge of the children in their care and the support they offer for transition. As a mother and an early years teacher I highly recommend Acton Playgroup.

A really lovely playgroup Rated 5 out of 5
Acton Playgorup is a brilliant playgroup which treats all children individually. Both my children have attended here and we would highly recommend them. They have a professional approach and nuture the children to become their own characters while providing them with great life skills and foundations for school. Preparation for school is excellent and the transitions from playgroup to reception class is seamless. Submitted: 20/07/2019
