Autism Movement Therapy - Ability School of Dance

ABILITY SCHOOL OF DANCE is an up and coming local dance class provider.

We offer specialised, inclusive opportunities to dance, for individuals of all ages and abilities.

Our classes are specifically tailored to suit those from a wide selection of marginalised groups, who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the benefits of dance.

We cover both the creative and technical aspects of movement, in a variety of styles and genres.

Our aim is to promote physical, mental and emotional wellbeing for all of our participants. We achieve this by focusing on multiple skill sets, which in turn also vastly improve the future life prospects of our dancers.

AUTISM MOVEMENT THERAPY classes, starting Autumn 2018.

Please get in touch to book onto a free taster session!

AMT is an exciting, innovative approach, combining movement, music and improvisation in a highly structured program, in order to enrich the lives of individuals on the Autism Spectrum.

Supported by academic research, the AMT method is proving to be one of the most effective ways to activate and awaken areas of the brain, which may otherwise remain dormant in these individuals.

AMT works by involving both visual movement mirroring and auditory receptive processing, alongside repetition of progressive patterns and increasingly complex sequences, to stimulate both the left and right hemispheres of the brain simultaneously.

Whereas in Autism, communication between the two hemispheres is impaired, this in turn promotes interhemispheric integration - cognitive re-mapping, made possible by the existence of neuroplasticity - through which both established and new neuronal pathways across the corpus callosum are strengthened.

Ultimately, connectivity and transmission across the whole brain is optimised, enabling individuals on the Autism Spectrum to process information in a far more efficient manner.

AMT has repeatedly been shown to lead to vast improvements in social interaction, self-esteem, behavioural responses, emotional regulation, speech & language comprehension, sensorimotor skills, focus, memory and consequentially, in addition, academic achievement.

Rather than “fixing” autism, AMT aims to empower individuals, enabling them to become more independent and better able to cope in an unpredictable, neurotypical world, therefore allowing them to lead happier, more fulfilling lives.

The Befriending Scheme

The Befriending Scheme provides friendship and learning opportunities for adults (16yrs+) from vulnerable groups, including those with mental health needs and older people, as well as our existing members with learning disabilities. We also offer various volunteering opportunities with extra support for those who need it.

Founded as a registered charity in 1989 as West Suffolk Befriending Scheme, our core activities are running regular drop-in centres, now known as Hubs, building meaningful 1-to-1 friendships between vulnerable people and volunteer befrienders, evening Befrienders Clubs and Saturday morning groups.

We also run one-off themed activity days, workshops and social events as well as providing volunteer training and support for carers across the county.

A Hub is a place you can go to enjoy the company of other adults of all ages and abilities, and join in with all the exciting things which are happening at the groups each week. There is a changing programme of events all planned in advance.

Our Hubs are located all over Suffolk, so there’s sure to be one nearby.

Please visit our website for more details.

DanceEast is so much more than a dance class facilitator and theatre venue. Artists and professionals are at the heart of our organisation and we are committed to supporting them in various ways; Associate Artist Scheme, Rural Retreats, CPD workshops, Advance Levels Classes, Choreographic Development Fund and much more.

DanceEast has been running a range of innovative community projects for over thirty years. We work with a range of partners on local, national and international projects and enjoy introducing people to dance for the first time as much as developing and refining skills in more experienced dancers.

Experience of including people with special educational needs and disabilities

DanceEast holds 'Springboard' classes for both children and adults with additional needs. The classes are pre-school age, 4yrs+, 7yrs+and 16yrs+.

Our Adult Springboard class is for adults with additional needs and carers are not required to attend unless personal care and support is needed. The tutors have extensive experience teaching dance to adults with learning and physical difficulties.

This class helps the participants to adapt to different situations and it assists with their social, creative and physical development. Engaging props, themes and stimuli are used to create beautiful movement.

Participants will begin to explore choreography and how to put moves together to create routines or pieces that can be expressive, narrative, emotional or purely physical.

For further information about this class please contact Box Office on 01473 295230.

P.L.O.T. CIC

P.L.O.T. is a not for profit organisation. We support children who are struggling with education. We are based on a working agricultural and livery yard in Wickham Market. We offer a therapeutic approach. Children are referred to us from schools, LA, and health, many are suffering from anxiety, mental health issues, some have experienced abuse and trauma [children in care]. We offer two creative workshops, an outdoor classroom, our own allotment, plenty of wide open space for outdoor cooking and bush craft as well as horse riding and horse care.

We have centre approval from NCFE so we can offer vocational qualifications to secondary school age children. We have a committed and dedicated team of professionals on site to support children following a therapeutic approach . We would welcome volunteers who would like to make a difference to a child/young person life. Welcome volunteers interested in supporting with arts and craft, workshop piratical skills [woodwork etc] preparing and cooking snack and lunch and outside activities. Our aim at P.L.O.T. is to prevent children from being excluded.

We believe every child/young person has the potential to achieve and for many children/young people this is the starting point supporting them to believe in themselves. We welcome positive people who believe they can help make a difference.

Plus Club

For children and young people with a diagnosis of ASD aged 13 and above.  This club is specifically designed to go out and about and take the children to access mainstream activities, such as the cinema, go karting, shopping and bowling.  The young people take an active role in planning the activities which normally take place between 10am and 2pm.  They are encouraged to manage their own money and use their social skills to do things like book their own train tickets.

The club has been very successful in facilitating friendships and helping young people with ASD find the confidence to access mainstream activities outside of the club.

We currently have a waiting list for access to the Plus Club, so if you would to be added, or would like to discuss anything further, then please contact the club coordinator.

TOPCATS Choices - Support for young people and adults with additional needs

Topcats offer support for young people and adults with additional needs from the age of 5 years to 30 years old based in Suffolk.

Topcats is a small, local charity based in Pakefield, Lowestoft. We are partly grant-funded by Activities Unlimited.

TOPCATS offers fun, friendship and the chance to build transferable life skills in an engaging and welcoming environment. Once a young person has joined Topcats, we ensure that we take time to get to know each individual and make sure they are at ease with a key worker who will support them to make their own choices.

As a team, it is our primary aim to help each individual develop their own social independence and life skills in order to reach their potential in a supported environment. In addition, we are able to supply young people with a vast range of exciting sensory, art, sport and music equipment, to help them build up their awareness of themselves and the world around them.

We offer a weekly 'Choices' day time group for people who are looking for alternative day care. This group is open to anyone aged 16 - 30 with any additional needs. We base all activities around the group and with a moderate staff ratio we are able to offer one to one support and mentoring. Our activities are mainly focused on community access and life skills within a safe environment.

You can pop into see us at our premises on Morton Road; the staff are more than happy to meet you and show you around! Alternatively, you can email Carolyn to discuss things further.

Youth Dinghy Open Sessions for Disabled Sailors

These are Open Sessions for children and young adults to enable people with disabilities of all kinds to go dinghy sailing. They may pursue this through training to formal qualifications or simply be taken for a sail around the safe, enclosed waters of Alton Water reservoir by qualified instructors and volunteer helpers.

No previous sailing experience is required as Royal Yachting Association Instructors are on hand at all times.

Waterproof clothing can be provided and bouyancy aids are provided for all sailors. The specially designed boats are unsinkable and un-capsizeable and a safety boat is in attendence at all times.

Sailors are also encouraged to 'learn the ropes' by getting involved in the rigging of the dinghies for use.
