The Happy Shack
It is difficult for families with a child being treated for cancer to continue to enjoy family time together in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. Concerns about access and the appropriateness of facilities, along with the costs involved, often prevent these families from enjoying the benefits of outdoor activities. The Happy Shack provides families with the chance to enjoy a low-cost day together, enjoying the benefits of a relaxed outdoor 'holiday' environment, that is tailored to their needs.
Families with children who are or have been recently treated for cancer can book to use our beach hut in Walton-on-the-Naze in Essex, for a family day trip. While the use of this newly-built hut has been kindly donated by The East Anglian Group, donations will be used to provide appropriate equipment and facilities in the hut, travel expenses, and seaside treats such as ice-creams and other refreshments.
The Happy Shack is first and foremost for use by families living in the East of England (Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk) who have a child who is currently or has recently been treated for cancer or leukaemia. Bookings can be made by these families at any time, although priority will be given to families who have not booked the Shack within the past 6 months.
The Happy Shack can be used any day of the week, and bookings can be requested via our online enquiry form at unlockalifeforlockey.co.uk (Click on The Happy Shack Beach Hut on the home page for more information and to request a booking.) Ages up to 18 years.

- Guests using the beach hut have ONE parking permit for the private car park. If you are travelling with more than one car, the second vehicle will have to be parked away from The Happy Shack car park. For Blue Badge Holders: The best places to park would be on the double yellow lines in The Parade or New Pier Street as these are closest to the Pier Approach. These only allow parking for up to three hours with a blue badge. There are also limited waiting bays just beyond the junction to Pier Approach, which would enable all day parking and a dedicated blue badge bay (although only for one vehicle) at the end of this stretch of bays. Non Badge Holders: Pay & Display car parks are located in Mill Lane and Church Road.
